Mask up in crowded places, says DG

PETALING JAYA (Sept 2, 2009) : Although there have been 72 deaths from influenza A (H1N1) to date, Malaysians are still not paying heed to the Health Ministry’s advice to wear masks in crowded public places.

“Based on health officials observation, many people are still going to crowded places like shopping complexes, stalls and outlets and commercial buildings without face masks,” Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Mohd Ismail Merican said in a statement today.

“Even though they do not show symptoms of Influenza A (H1N1), there is still potential for infection from those with symptoms. Worse still when people bring small children (to crowded places),” he said.

He said people should keep away from crowded places, including social gatherings and functions, as much as possible.

Urging everyone, yet again to strictly adhere to the Health Ministry’s advice, Mohd Ismail reminded parents and guardians to monitor their children’s health, especially those sitting for the UPSR examination next week.

“Please be extra careful especially for children with high risk factors such as asthma, and take the recommended measures to prevent them from being infected by the virus,” he said.

The Health Ministry reiterated its advice to all those with Influenza-like-Illness (ILI) symptoms, including those under home-quarantine, to practice social distancing by maintaining at least one metre of gap when dealing with other people.

Mohd Ismail said as of 9am today, 87 new patients with ILI have been admitted to hospitals for treatment, while 160 patients have been discharged.

“This brings the total number of ILI patients being treated in 106 hospitals nationwide to 1,238. Of the total, 264 have been confirmed positive of the virus,” he said.

From those confirmed positive of H1N1, 39 patients are under the Intensive Care Unit with 29 (74%) of them are from the high risk group.
